How to Choose a Session Location

Two women stand back-to-front in the middle of a creek. One has her arm around the other and they share a smile together.

Head to this post to learn the three things you need to choose your session location!

Choosing a session location is really important! But couples often have no idea how to choose one. So here are the top three things that should go into your decision!

1. Think about shared interests

What are the things you love to do together? Go on a hike? Wine/beer taste? Cafe hop in your city? Kayak? Make bread at home? Think about those top 1-3 activities — this is a great place to start because I LOVE working those things in to a session! Not only does it give you something to do/focus on (besides me taking your picture) but it also means the photos will truly reflect YOU!

2. Think about meaningful settings

When you think back over the course of your relationship, are there settings that are more important to you than others? Places you made meaningful memories? But hold on: don’t pigeonhole yourself here to THAT ONE SPECIFIC PLACE if it’s just not possible. If your first rental together meant a lot to you, but you’ve since moved somewhere else, consider a session at home! If you met at a coffee shop across the country, pick your next-favorite in your current hometown. Sure, it’s great to use the exact locations that are sentimental, but if that’s not possible, think outside the box a bit!

3. Think about weather

If you’ve decided on a location and it’s outdoors, you definitely need to think about what the weather will be like in the time of year you’re aiming for. If you are not down at all for rain, schedule your session in the early summer or fall. If you like the sensation of being bundled up (it’s cozy, don’t hate!), choose late fall or early spring. Be mindful about the month you choose! And once that rolls around, try to keep an open mind about less-than-perfect weather. Maybe the forecast has wind or light rain in the forecast unexpectedly — embrace it!

So you've decided that it's finally time for pro photos of you two -- woohoo! Now, how to choose a session location?? Get the deets here.
