There’s this moment that happens with almost every couple who elopes in the redwoods: they’re walking along the path, caught up in the excitement of their wedding day, when suddenly they stop. Look up. Get quiet. The ancient redwoods have this way of commanding presence; of gently pulling you out of your head and into the moment. I’ve seen it happen dozens of times, and it’s magic every single time. Whether you’re dreaming of a Northern California redwood elopement or just beginning to explore forest wedding ideas, this post is going to have something for you!
Why Redwoods Create the Perfect Elopement Sanctuary
When couples first tell me they’re considering a redwood forest elopement, they usually mention the obvious: the majestic height of the trees, the filtered sunlight, the epic photos they’ve seen. But what they discover on their actual wedding day goes far deeper.
These groves have stood witness to centuries, some trees over two thousand years old (I know, absolutely insane to get your head around!). There’s something profound about exchanging vows in the presence of living beings that have weathered hundreds of years of storms, fires, and seasons. Many couples tell me they can feel the quiet wisdom of these ancient giants – as if the trees themselves are holding space for their momentous day.
As someone who’s photographed a number of redwood elopements (including getting married under them myself!), I’m a little biased, but really: the forest naturally creates one of the most intimate ceremony spaces imaginable. Towering redwoods form living ‘walls’ that block out the world beyond (making it feel like you’re in your own bubble), while soft light filters through the canopy above. The thick carpet of needles and undergrowth of ferns muffles sound, creating a setting where even whispers feel meaningful. In a word, redwood forests are magic.
Making Space for Sacred Moments
While the redwoods naturally create an atmosphere of reverence, there are ways to enhance these special moments throughout your day:
Choose Your Time Wisely
While redwood forests are ethereal and captivating at any time of day, morning light in the redwoods is something else entirely. The forest is typically quietest then, with beams of light piercing through the morning fog. If you’re not early risers (or that timeframe doesn’t work with your getting ready or other activities), afternoon brings its own beauty! Watching the light stream down through the canopy at this time of day is one of my favorites. If you’re visiting the redwoods outside of summer after the visible rays of the sun have disappeared (even before official sunset), I always recommend keeping an extra layer or two on hand as it can get chilly pretty quickly in the late afternoon and evening. But, this time of day often produces the most moody-looking light if that’s something you’re interested in!
Find Your Secret Spots
Keep in mind that not every redwood grove wedding spot is created equal. The most photographed spots aren’t always the most meaningful for ceremonies (unless your ceremony is happening at sunrise before the crowds arrive!). Some of my favorite moments have happened in lesser-known corners of the forest – places where fallen logs create natural seating, or where small streams provide a soothing soundtrack. These hidden spots let you fully sink into the experience and create opportunities to engage all of your senses at once (which is the best way to encode memories into your long-term storage! Paying attention to multiple senses in any given moment helps you remember finer details about your experience).
Embrace the Stillness
There’s no need to fill every moment with activity, and elopement days are often more meaningful when couples don’t. This is something that many couples have to ‘unlearn’ coming from the traditional world of weddings (whether that was their own original plan, or that’s the only type of wedding they’ve experienced) where every bustling moment of a wedding day is accounted for, leaving scant few moments of quiet. The idea of open, unstructured time often feels uncomfy at first, but some of the most profound parts of redwood elopements happen in the quiet spaces. This might look like taking a moment to write down your thoughts before (or after) your ceremony, walking silently hand in hand between the trees, or simply standing together and looking up at the canopy above. The forest invites you to slow down – and that’s when the magic really happens.
Capturing the Magic
The secret to incredible redwood elopement photos isn’t just about the epic scale of the trees – it’s about capturing how it feels to be there. When couples are truly present in these moments, something shifts. Their expressions soften. Their movements become more natural. They forget about the camera entirely.
Planning Your Redwood Forest Ceremony Photos
I use creative techniques to capture both the grandeur and the intimacy of your experience. One of my favorites is using a mirror to catch reflections of the surrounding setting. Another is finding unique angles that show both you and the sheer scale of trees and forest around you. Other times, it’s about stepping back and letting quiet moments unfold naturally – the way you lean into each other while reading your vows, or your shared expression of awe as you explore your private grove.
For your ceremony specifically, each redwood park (whether state, national, or regional) usually has designated ceremony locations that we’ll need to work with. But don’t worry – these spots have been thoughtfully chosen for their beauty and accessibility. The key is finding the perfect balance within these locations based on how many guests will be with you, general preferences you might have, and seasonal availability (some pre-approved ceremony locations vary on the time of year). I’m always thinking about multiple perspectives – capturing both intimate close-ups of your emotions and pulling back to show how the ancient trees are bearing witness to your promises. Sometimes the most powerful and beautiful photos happen when we embrace the forest’s natural drama: your silhouettes against filtered sunlight, or those candid reactions between you two when only the towering trees around you are watching.
Making It Your Own
Every couple who elopes in the redwoods experiences their day differently! Some are drawn to the adventure of hiking to secluded spots, while others prefer to stay close to accessible trails. Some want to include personal rituals like exchanging private letters or sharing a quiet picnic among the trees. Whatever resonates with you, know that there’s a way to weave it into your day that feels authentic. I’m here to be your advocate for making sure your wedding experience reflects both your and your partner’s preferences and overall vision, and I love giving couples ideas to jumpstart their brainstorming if they get stuck.
A Different Kind of Wedding Day
At the end of the day, what couples remember most about their redwood elopement isn’t just the stunning photos or the perfect light. It’s how it felt to step away from the noise of traditional weddings and into something more meaningful. It’s exchanging vows in a place that makes you feel simultaneously tiny and infinitely significant. It’s creating memories in a setting that will continue standing sentinel long after you’ve celebrated anniversaries.
The redwoods offer an experience of being surrounded by ancient wisdom and natural beauty, and it’s one that stays with the people who visit! Whether you’re just beginning to consider locations for your elopement or you’ve already fallen in love with the idea of a redwood elopement, know that these groves have a way of making your day feel exactly as it should: intimate, profound, and completely your own.
